Happy World Teacher Day! Please join us in celebrating teachers and educators this October.
The teaching profession is one of the most essential careers imaginable. We want to take a moment to thank teachers for their hard work. Whether primary or higher education, their contributions certainly don’t escape our notice.
World Teacher Day is a global annual event that gives us all a chance to thank the teachers in our lives.
What is World Teacher Day?
World Teacher Day is an annual international celebration. Teachers Day is celebrated in over one hundred countries on October 5th.
While World Teacher Day should be a day of general thanks, there are two primary focuses.
- The impact teachers have
- The role of teachers in providing quality education
The History of World Teacher’s Day
World Teacher Day was established in 1994.
It was established to commemorate the adoption of the UNESCO/ILO recommendations concerning the Status of Teachers in 1966.
Within this recommendation, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the International Labor Organization (ILO) set standards for teachers’ working conditions.
World Teacher Day 2024 Celebrations
World Teacher Day 2024 falls on a Saturday this year, and some exciting events are happening.
This year, World Teacher Day aims to highlight the importance of integrating teacher’s perspectives into educational policies.
The day will feature an opening ceremony with speeches from UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF, and Education International.
Ways to Celebrate World Teacher Day
There are many different ways to celebrate World Teacher Day. The following are a few ways to start:
Support Educational Systems
World Teacher Day is a great time to show your support for educational initiatives and non-profits.
These initiatives work hard to simplify life for teachers at every level. They provide school funding, develop educational resources, offer teaching support, and more.
Support for these initiatives includes donations, volunteering, or simply nominating a school or teacher to benefit.
Give a Gift of Thanks
A small gift could put a smile on a teacher’s face. Get to know the teachers in your life so you can choose something meaningful for them.
Replenish Classroom Supplies
Access to educational resources is a major theme during World Teacher Day.
That’s why this is a great time to replenish dwindling classroom supplies.
The best supplies will depend on the school, so take some time to speak with someone in the office to see what you can help with.
Offer Your Time
Teachers and parents must work closely together for good education to be possible.
Say ‘thank you’ this year by offering your time in class however you can.
Teachers often seek parents who can listen to children read. Similarly, it’s always useful to have parental volunteers during school trips and events.
Speak to your child’s teacher about where they can use your help in the classroom.
Nominate Quality Teachers
World Teachers Day is all about recognition. This year’s event will include the giving of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development.
Take inspiration from this form of thanks by nominating quality teachers for awards in your local area where possible.
Many states have local awards for public sector workers.
Nominating a teacher can give them a boost and is a sure way to show how much you appreciate all they do.
