Description
What our Ordered Pairs and Quadrants lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Ordered Pairs and Quadrants teaches students about coordinate planes, including their quadrants and how to use ordered pairs. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and label quadrants on a coordinate plane as well as recognize the signs of numbers in ordered pairs for the location in a quadrant. This lesson is for students in 6th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to draw a large coordinate plane outdoors using chalk and give your students a card with an ordered pair on it, having them place themselves in the correct quadrant. You can also have your students create a map with various places and label them using the quadrants.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
ORDERED PAIRS AND QUADRANTS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Ordered Pairs and Quadrants
The Ordered Pairs and Quadrants lesson plan includes one content page. We can draw, or plot, ordered pairs on a coordinate plane using the x-axis and y-axis. We can do this on a graph. Ordered pairs are sets of two numbers that we can use to locate a specific point on a coordinate plane. We write ordered pairs in the form (x, y).
Coordinate planes are divided into four sections called quadrants. We use Roman Numerals to label the quadrants. The first quadrant is in the upper right corner, the second is in the upper left corner, the third is in the lower left corner, and the fourth is in the lower right corner. If you follow the quadrants in order, you form a C! This is a helpful way to remember the placement of the quadrants.
We can figure out which quadrant a point is located in by looking at whether the numbers in the ordered pair are positive or negative. Ordered pairs where both numbers are positive, like (4, 5), are in quadrant I. Pairs where the first number is negative and the second is positive, like (-4, 5), are in quadrant II. Pairs where both numbers are negative, like (-4, -5), are in quadrant III. Finally, pairs where the first number is positive and the second is negative, like (4, -5), are in quadrant IV.
ORDERED PAIRS AND QUADRANTS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Ordered Pairs and Quadrants lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
FOLDABLE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to create a foldable using graph paper and a sheet of colored paper. They will fold and cut the flaps, labeling each piece. The worksheet shows an example of what the finished product should look like.
LABELING QUADRANTS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will look at a graph with shapes on it and will identify which quadrant each shape is found in.
ORDERED PAIRS AND QUADRANTS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to write a point that would be found in each quadrant of a graph. They will then draw different shapes in each quadrant.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
