The game of basketball is one of the most beloved sports in the world. Exciting and fast-paced, it is a great way for people of all ages to stay active and healthy. Here are 10 fun facts designed to capture kids’ curiosity and help them learn more about basketball.
A Teacher Invented Basketball
While its roots come from various other games, a teacher created basketball. Dr. James Naismith was a PE teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. He wanted to create a game to keep his students active indoors during the cold winter.
In 1891, basketball was invented. The first game used a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals. Over time, it grew into the global phenomenon we know today.
The First Hoops Had No Holes
When it was originally played, peach baskets were used as hoops. However, unlike today’s hoops, these had no holes in the bottom. This meant that every time someone scored, someone else had to climb a ladder to get the ball back.
Someone suggested cutting a hole so the ball could fall through. The game became a lot more fun for the players having to climb up and down over and over again.
Basketball Is Played On Every Continent
Basketball is popular globally, not just in the United States. The sport is especially popular in Japan, Spain, the Philippines, and more. When you play basketball, you’re joining in on a global game with others halfway across the world.
The First Basketball Wasn’t A Basketball
When Dr. Naismith invented basketball, there wasn’t a ball designed specifically for the game. The players used a soccer ball. It wasn’t until three years later, in 1894, that they started creating balls specifically designed for basketball.
Manufacturers originally made them of leather to allow for easier bouncing and dribbling. Later, officials colored them orange to make them easier to see in fast-paced games.
The Tallest And Shortest NBA Players
People usually recognize basketball players for their extreme height. However, the game has been home to players of all heights, with some of the most famous being surprisingly short or exceedingly tall. The tallest player in the NBA was Gheorghe Mursan, who was 7 feet 7 inches tall.
Meanwhile, the shortest NBA player was Muggsy Bogues, who was 5 feet 3 inches tall. Both were famous and highly accomplished athletes.
Slam Dunks Used To Be An Illegal Move
Although slam dunks are one of the most famous and exciting plays in any basketball game, they weren’t always allowed. The NCAA banned them from 1967 to 1976 because they believed that dunking gave taller players too much of an advantage. They eventually overturned the rule, and dunking creates hype at any basketball game played. It became the signature move of great players like LeBron James.
The WNBA Has Some Of The Most Skilled Players In The World
Girls and women have been a part of the basketball world for decades. The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) started in 1997 and is home to some of the best players in the world. Athletes like Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird inspired young players to follow their dreams. Women’s basketball encourages young girls to take an interest in basketball and the broader world of sports.
The Fastest Points In NBA Game History
One of the best things about basketball is how exciting and fast-paced games can be. Athletes can often break records in mere seconds. For example, Klay Thompson scored the fastest three-pointer in history, shooting 0.6 seconds after receiving the ball.
The fastest double-double took only just three minutes.
The Harlem Globetrotters Are A Worldwide Phenomenon
Basketball is a highly competitive game, showing athletes to the best of their abilities. The Harlem Globetrotters basketball team also shows how interesting and hilarious the game can be. This famous team combines athletic skill with tricks and stunts.
One of their most famous players is NBA star Wilt Chamberlain. He helped this popular sport become a game that could showcase the heights of creativity and skill.
The Longest Basketball Shot
The record for the longest-ever successful basketball shot is a massive 113 feet. That is more than a third of the length of a football field. Thunder Law, a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, made this amazing shot. Seeing how far you can successfully shoot is also a great game for young ballers to play.
