Description

What our Two Digit Addition with Regrouping: Advanced lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Two Digit Addition with Regrouping: Advanced provides students with two different strategies for regrouping. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add two digit numbers using regrouping strategies. This lesson is for students in 1st grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are highlighters and brads to create spinners.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. All of these suggestion relate to the lesson activity. For example, it suggests change the number of popsicle sticks for each group for the activity depending on their skill level. You can also challenge students by having them draw more than 2 sticks to add 3 or 4 two digit numbers. You can also have your students put the sticks in a cup or lay them on the floor instead of putting them facedown on their desks. Another suggestion is to allow students to use a calculator to check the answers if needed. Finally, for practice, the class can practice together using a random digit generator online and writing their answers on whiteboards.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

TWO DIGIT ADDITION WITH REGROUPING: ADVANCED LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Standard Algorithm

The Two Digit Addition with Regrouping: Advanced lesson plan includes two pages of content. The lesson begins with the steps for solving two digit addition problems with regrouping using the standard algorithm. Step 1 is to line up the numbers by place value. Step 2 is to highlight the ones place. Next, step 3 is to add the ones place. If the numbers in the ones place add up to more than 9, we need to regroup. In the lesson example, the sum of the one place is 15, so we keep the 5 in the ones place and move the 1 ten to the tens place value spot. Finally, we add the tens. The lesson includes several more examples.

Expanded Notation

Next, the lesson shows the steps for solving with expanded notation. Step 1 is to write the problem horizontally. Step 2 is to the break each number into tens and ones. For step 3, we add the tens. For step 4, we add the ones. Finally, step 5 is to add them all together to find the final answer. The lesson includes several examples for students to reference.

TWO DIGIT ADDITION WITH REGROUPING: ADVANCED LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Two Digit Addition with Regrouping: Advanced lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

KaBOOM! ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will work in groups to complete the activity worksheet. Each group will play a game where they place popsicle sticks with either an addition or subtraction problem or the word “KaBOOM!” on them face down on a desk. Each member of the group will pick up a stick one at a time and solve the problem. If they solve the problem correctly, they keep the stick. If they solve it incorrectly, they place it facedown on the desk again. Each group goes one-by-one until all the sticks are gone. If a student draws a KaBOOM stick, they place all of their sticks facedown on the desk.

SPINNERS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to use the spinners that their teacher gives them to spin two or three numbers at a time and add them together.

TWO DIGIT ADDITION WITH REGROUPING: ADVANCED HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will complete a problem where they have to determine which path they can take from one place to the next without spending more than 100 coins on tolls.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes an answer key for the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits this page. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
