Our Rectangular Arrays lesson plan teaches students how to recognize rows and columns in a rectangular array. Students also learn how to generate an addition sentence to express the sum of the array and complete practice problems that use these concepts.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. Lesson Objectives and Overview: Rectangular Arrays teaches students to recognize rows and columns in a rectangular array and generate an addition sentence to express the sum of the array. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize rows and columns in a rectangular array and generate an addition sentence to express the sum of the array. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. If you would like to include a group activity as a part of this lesson, one option is to have your students use raisins or dried fruit to create their own arrays for problems as a class. For a more hands-on activity, you could have your students use modeling blocks to model arrays. Another optional addition to this lesson is to have your students practice putting themselves in arrays as a class. Finally, you can have your students use chalk to draw arrays outside on the ground and then count the sum and write an equation.

RECTANGULAR ARRAYS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Rectangular Arrays

The Rectangular Arrays lesson plan includes two content pages. Arrays are arrangements of objects or pictures in rows and columns. Row are horizontal, which means they go from left to right. Columns are vertical, which means they go up and down.

The lesson shows an example array shaped like a rectangle. This is a rectangular array with two rows and four columns. The sum is the answer to an addition problem. To write this array as an addition problem, you use the number of objects in the row as the addends: 4 + 4 = 8. You can also write this array as an addition problem using the number of objects in the column as the addends: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8. Either way you write it, the answer is the same!

Let’s look at another example array with 3 rows and 3 columns. You can write the array as an addition problem with the number of objects in the rows as the addends: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9.

Finally, let’s look at another example array with 2 rows and 7 columns. The easiest way to write this array as an addition problem is to use the number of objects in the row as the addends: 7 + 7 = 14.

RECTANGULAR ARRAYS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Rectangular Arrays lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

COLOR AN ARRAY ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to use the paint provided to draw each of the arrays on the worksheet using Q-tips. Each row should be a different color.

REPEATED ADDITION PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will use repeated addition to write an equation to show how many objects are in each set. They will then circle the rows of objects.

RECTANGULAR ARRAYS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to draw an array for each equation and fill in the sum.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. Like the practice worksheet, for the quiz, students will use repeated addition to write an equation to show how many objects are in each set. They will then circle the rows of objects.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
