Our Odd or Even Objects lesson plan teaches students how to tell the difference between odd and even numbers. Students practice finding and classifying odd and even numbers in order to solidify their understanding of the lesson material.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to hand each of your students a number on a card and ask all the even numbers to stand up or to go to one side of the room and all the odd numbers to sit down or go to a different side of the room.

Description

What our Odd or Even Objects lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Odd or Even Objects teaches students how to determine what an odd and even number is, reinforces vocabulary and gives students examples of even and odd numbers. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to determine if a number is even or odd. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to hand each of your students a number on a card and ask all the even numbers to stand up or to go to one side of the room and all the odd numbers to sit down or go to a different side of the room. You can also have your students use disks to count out the number and then physically separate the disks into piles to determine if the number is even or odd. Finally, you could have your students create a hopscotch and only jump on the even numbers and then only jump on the odd numbers.

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ODD OR EVEN OBJECTS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Odd or Even Objects

The Odd or Even Objects lesson plan includes one content page. All numbers are either odd or even.

Odd numbers can’t be divided into two equal parts. Say you have a group of five friends and each friend needs a partner. This isn’t possible because one friend won’t have a partner. If someone doesn’t have a partner after everyone pairs up, the number is odd. Odd numbers include 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21.

Even numbers can be divided into two equal parts. Say you have a group of eight friends and each friend needs a partner. This is possible because everyone can pair up and have a partner. If everyone has a partner, the number is even. Even numbers include 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.

ODD OR EVEN OBJECTS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Odd or Even Objects lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

CUT AND PASTE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to cut out each of the numbers on the worksheet and glue them on in the correct spot under “even” or “odd.”

COLORING PRACTICE WORKSHEET’

For the practice worksheet, students will color the even numbers on the worksheet green and the odd numbers blue.

ODD OR EVEN HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to first look at a list of numbers and circle the even numbers. They will then look at another group of numbers and circle the odd numbers. Finally, they will answer questions about how you know if a number is even or odd.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will shade in the number of squares for each number and then determine if they’re odd or even using this visual aid. For example, they will shade in three squares for the number 3 and six squares for the number 6.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
