Understanding Details

In our Understanding Details lesson plan, students learn how to extract and recognize details in writing in order to enhance reading comprehension. Students practice identifying details in written works and articulating why they are important.

Our Understanding Details lesson plan develops reading comprehension and critical thinking skills in young students and teaches them about the 5 questions and how they are used to extract details from a story. During this lesson, students are asked to match each of the five “W” questions with statements that answer those questions. Students are also asked to read a provided story and answer the five “W” questions to extract the details from the story.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the details of a story by using the 5 (who, what, where, when, why) questions to understand the information presented in a story and other content.
