Our Ask & Answer Questions to Clarify Word Meaning lesson plan teaches students strategies for asking and answering questions to help determine the meaning of an unknown word or phrase. During this lesson, students are asked to create their own “anchor chart” for reading strategies by reading the name of each strategy taught during the lesson and the questions to ask when using each strategy; they then illustrate each strategy in the last column of the chart. Students are also asked to find words that they don’t know, write what they think the word means, and then tell which strategy they used to determine the meaning of the unknown word.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to ask and answer questions about unknown words or phrases and will be able to use context clues to help them understand unfamiliar words.
