Lesson Objectives and Overview: Tens from 10 to 90 teaches students how to count by tens up to 90. At the end of the lesson, students will understand that the quantity of tens from 10 – 90 represent groups of tens and zero ones. This lesson is for students in 1st grade.
Classroom Procedure

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students create their own bundles of ten by stringing ten beads onto a string and tying it off. If you have more advanced students, you can begin to have them count bundles higher than nine.

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

Tens from 10 to 90
The Tens from 10 to 90 lesson plan includes two content pages. If you group 10 ones, you get one 10! 10 ones equals 1 ten, 20 ones equals 2 tens, 30 ones equals 3 tens, and so on.
When you group numbers into tens, there are no ones leftover in the ones place. The lesson includes a picture that shows 5 groups of ten. The value of 5 sets of 10 is 50. What is the value of 3 sets of ten? 30!

The Tens from 10 to 90 lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
COUNTING GROUPS OF TEN ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will receive small objects that they can use to count (popsicle sticks, pennies, beads, or something else). The students will make different sets of 10 on their desk using their objects, all the way from 10 to 90.
HOW MANY TENS? PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to first match the number with the amount of tens (for example, they will match the number 40 with “four tens”). Then, they will fill in the correct number for each amount of tens listed.
TENS FROM 10 TO 90 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will make groups of ten from the symbols printed on the worksheet.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
