Description
What our Subtraction Review lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Subtraction Review reminds students how to subtract two-digit numbers by place value and regrouping. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to fluently subtract using regrouping within 100. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional adjustment to the homework assignment is to have a few different blank coloring pages pre-copied for students that might have difficulty creating their own so that they can focus on designing the key and writing the problems.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
SUBTRACTION REVIEW LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Subtraction Review
The Subtraction Review lesson plan includes two content pages. To subtract, you find the difference between two numbers. There are a few steps to follow when subtracting multi-digit numbers.
Let’s take a look at an example: 57 – 45. When subtracting multi-digit numbers, you first need to line the numbers up using their place value. You line up the ones with the ones and the tens with the tens. Then, you start subtracting, starting with the ones. In the example, you subtract 7 -5 to get 2. Next, move to the place value to the left (the tens): 5 – 4 = 1. Put them together to get a final answer of 12.
However, sometimes the top number in the ones place is smaller than the number on the bottom. In that case, you borrow from the tens in order to subtract. Let’s take a look at an example: 63 – 28. Line the numbers up and start with the ones. In this example, 3 is on top but is a smaller number than 8, so you need to borrow from the tens. When borrowing, you subtract one from the tens (6 – 1 = 5). You add that 1 to the ones place. Then, subtract your new top number from the bottom number: 13 – 8 = 5. Next, subtract the tens: 5 – 2 = 3. The final answer is 35.
The lesson closes with some more examples of multi-digit subtraction for students to review.
SUBTRACTION REVIEW LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Subtraction Review lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
COLORING PAGE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will color in the picture on the worksheet using the provided key. To figure out which sections need which color, they will solve subtraction problems.
SUBTRACTION REVIEW PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to solve ten subtraction problems using any method.
CREATE YOUR OWN COLORING PAGE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will create their own coloring page with a key and problems like the activity worksheet, including an answer key.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes an answer key for the practice worksheet. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
