What our Real-World Math Applications lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Real-World Math Applications exposes students to math problems that involve everyday situations. Students will learn that math is used by nearly everyone every day in some form or fashion! By the end of the lesson, students will be able to apply basic math skills to real-world problems. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students count the number of worksheets they need to hand out to ensure everyone gets one. You could also ask your students to keep the calendar or remind you when it is time to go somewhere by looking at the clock. Another option is to tell your students you have a certain amount of money to spend on supplies, give them a list with prices, and ask them if you have enough money to buy them. Finally, you could play games where keeping score is required.

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

Real-World Math Applications
The Real-World Math Applications lesson plan includes two content pages. The first page is a story about a teacher and her students. One student becomes frustrated with their math lessons and says that she thinks learning math is a waste of time. The teacher tells her that we actually use math every day!
After reading this story, the teacher will ask their class what the students’ problem in the story is. Have they ever felt the same way?
Pre-Assessment
The second page of the Real-World Math Applications lesson plan shows some examples of real-world math applications. For example, in sports, math is used for keeping score, determining the length of fields, and for stopwatches. At the store, math is involved in prices, money, savings, and discounts. Some other areas of day-to-day life that involve math are calendars, clocks, clothing, lunch, books, computers, writing, and distance. What other examples can you come up with?

The Real-World Math Applications lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
MATH EXAMPLES ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
Students will work in groups to complete the activity worksheet. First, each group will look around the classroom and find examples of where math is used, writing them down on the worksheet. Next, they will find five friends and write down their birthdates in order from oldest to youngest.
Finally, they will play the step game. For this game, they will find 2 friends and count the number of steps it takes each of them to walk from one place to another. Who can walk the distance using the fewest steps? They will record their answers on the worksheet.
AIRPLANE TAKE OFF PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will read the clocks shown next to each airplane on the worksheet to determine what time each airplane is scheduled to take off.
PIZZA HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to pretend they work at a pizza restaurant and have to serve four tables at one time with four pizzas, two cheese and two pepperoni. They will cut out pictures of each pizza and then cut those pictures into the correct size pieces for each of their tables.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
