Description

What our Percentage Discount and Percent of a Quantity lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Percentage Discount and Percent of a Quantity teaches students how to calculate the percentage discount, and find the percent, of a given quantity. Students will use a standard algorithm to find percentage discounts and percent quantity. They will be able to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. This lesson is for students in 5th grade and 6th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional adjustment to the lesson activity is to have your students create their own store and price cards for students to solve. An optional addition to this lesson is to expand the lesson to include other types of percent problems. You could also have your students use a local newspaper to find examples of discount percentage problems.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

PERCENTAGE DISCOUNT AND PERCENT OF A QUANTITY LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

How to Calculate a Percent Discount

The Percentage Discount and Percent of a Quantity lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson walks students through how to calculate a percent discount step-by-step.

Step 1 is to find the original price. Step 2 is to find the selling price. Next, step 3 is to the calculate the discount. Finally, step 4 is to calculate the percent discount using the formula: Percentage of Discount = (Discount/Original Price)*100.

Let’s look at a few examples using real-world scenarios. First, imagine you want to buy a new game console that originally cost $250 but is on sale for $175. How do you figure out the percentage of discount for the console? Let’s follow the steps. First, find the original price: $250. Next, find the selling price: $175. Third, calculate the discount: $250 – $175 = $75. Finally, calculate the percent discount using our formula: (75/250)*100 = 0.3*100 = 30%. Therefore, the percent discount on this console is 30%!

Let’s look at another example. A skateboard is usually sold for $65 but is on sale for $40.95. How do you figure out the percentage of discount for the skateboard? Let’s follow the steps again. First, find the original price: $65.00. Next, find the selling price: $40.95. Third, calculate the discount: $65.00 – $40.95 = $24.05. Finally, calculate the percent discount using our formula: (24.05/65.00)*100 = 0.37*100 = 37%. Therefore, the percent discount on this skateboard is 37%.

How to Find a Percent of a Quantity

To find the percent of a quantity or number, you use a simple proportion. All you need to do is fill in the numbers and solve. The proportion is: IS/OF = %/100. Essentially, all you need to do is divide the percentage by the quantity and multiply the product by 100. Finally, add the percent symbol!

Let’s take a look at a few examples. What percent of 72 is 18? To solve, plug the numbers into the proportion: 18/72 = %/100. (18*100)/72 = 1800/72 = 25. Therefore, 18 is 25% of 72.

Let’s take a look at another example. What percent of 110 is 99? To solve, plug the numbers into the proportion: 99/110 = %/100. (99*100)/110 = 9900/110 = 90. Therefore, 99 is 90% of 110.

Finally, let’s take a look at a third example. What percent of 2,450 is 1,519? To solve, plug the numbers into the proportion: (1519*100)/2,450 = 151,900/2,450 = 62. Therefore, 1,519 is 62% of 2,450.

PERCENTAGE DISCOUNT AND PERCENT OF A QUANTITY LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
