Let’s look at a few examples using real-world scenarios. First, imagine you want to buy a new game console that originally cost $250 but is on sale for $175. How do you figure out the percentage of discount for the console? Let’s follow the steps. First, find the original price: $250. Next, find the selling price: $175. Finally, calculate the percent discount using our formula: (24.05/65.00)*100 = 0.37*100 = 37%. Therefore, the percent discount on this skateboard is 37%.
How to Find a Percent of a Quantity
To find the percent of a quantity or number, you use a simple proportion. All you need to do is fill in the numbers and solve. The proportion is: IS/OF = %/100. Essentially, all you need to do is divide the percentage by the quantity and multiply the product by 100. Finally, add the percent symbol!
Let’s take a look at a few examples. What percent of 72 is 18? To solve, plug the numbers into the proportion: 18/72 = %/100. (18*100)/72 = 1800/72 = 25. Therefore, 18 is 25% of 72.
Let’s take a look at another example. What percent of 110 is 99? To solve, plug the numbers into the proportion: 99/110 = %/100. (99*100)/110 = 9900/110 = 90. Therefore, 99 is 90% of 110.
Finally, let’s take a look at a third example. What percent of 2,450 is 1,519? To solve, plug the numbers into the proportion: (1519*100)/2,450 = 151,900/2,450 = 62. Therefore, 1,519 is 62% of 2,450.
