Our Decimal and Fraction Conversion lesson plan teaches students how to do decimal and fraction conversions. Students complete practice problems in which they convert from decimals to fractions as well as from fractions to decimals.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have your students spin a globe and record as a class whether their thumb was touching land or water and then convert the fractions to decimals.

Description

What our Decimal and Fraction Conversion lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Decimal and Fraction Conversion introduces students to a real world skill they will need throughout their lives – decimal and fraction conversion. The lesson covers both converting fractions to decimals and converting decimals to fractions. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to convert from decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. This lesson is for students in 4th grade and 5th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson is to have your students use various objects, like the years on pennies or the colors of M&Ms, to find the fraction or decimal and then convert. You could also have your students spin a globe and record as a class whether their thumb was touching land or water and then convert the fractions to decimals.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

DECIMAL & FRACTION CONVERSION LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Decimal & Fraction Conversion

The Decimal & Fraction Conversion lesson plan includes two pages of content. It’s very helpful to know how to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions when solving math problems. Some kinds of problems are easier to solve when you’re using one or the other.

Fraction to Decimal

To convert from a fraction to a decimal, you need to divide the denominator into the numerator. The lesson includes a few examples. In the first example, you need to change 3/4 into a decimal. To do this, you divide the denominator (4) into the numerator (3). The answer you get is 0.75.

If you have a whole number in front of the fraction you need to convert into a decimal, you simply put the whole number in its correct place value. For example, if you want to convert 5 1/3 to a decimal, you divide the denominator (3) into the numerator (1). The answer you get is 0.67, so your final answer is 5.67.

Decimal to Fraction

To convert from a decimal to a fraction, you need to read the decimal closely, paying attention to the place values. You then reduce the fraction as needed. The lesson includes a few examples. In the first example, you need to change 0.35 to a fraction. You read this decimal as thirty-five hundredths, so the fraction is 35/100 (thirty-five over a hundred). You can then reduce this fraction to 7/20 to find your final answer. It’s important to note that the word “and” in algebra translates to the spot where the decimal point goes.

DECIMAL & FRACTION CONVERSION LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Decimal & Fraction Conversion lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

PASTA ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will receive three colors of pasta: green, orange, and yellow. They will count the number of each color that they have and will record their results in the table on the worksheet. They will then determine the amount of each color they have as both a fraction and a decimal. Finally, they will answer four questions about the exercise.

CONVERSION PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to convert nine decimals to fractions and nine fractions to decimals.

DECIMAL & FRACTION CONVERSION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will use a bag of skittles to fill in the chart on the worksheet. They will count how many of each color of Skittles they have in their bag and will use that number to determine the amount of each color in both fraction and decimal form.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will convert six decimals to fractions and six fractions to decimals.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
