Our Using Root Words for Meaning lesson plan teaches students about root words and how their meaning can change when combined with different prefixes and suffixes. During this lesson, students are asked to work collaboratively with a partner to read a text and identify as many root words as possible in the time provided, writing the full word and root word in the space provided; they then define the word as best as possible without using a dictionary. Students are also asked to match prefixes and suffixes that can be added to given root words.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root.
