Description
What our Alphabet: Letter Y lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter Y teaches young learners about the twenty-fifth letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter Y and name at least two words that begin with Y. This lesson is for students in preschool.
YARN ART ACTIVITY
For the activity, students will have fun making yarn art. Provide students with a long string of yarn (approximately 1.5 to 2 feet) and safety scissors. Have them cut the yarn into smaller pieces. Give students glue and the large outline of the uppercase and lowercase Y. Demonstrate how to put a dot of glue on the paper and a piece of yarn. Have students glue the yarn pieces onto the outline. Let dry and display.
Options and Extensions
There are lots of additional options you could add to the lesson. Do yoga stretches. Several yoga poses start with a Y (the Y-pose, yogi pose, young yogi pose, and so on). Get a ball of yarn and have the students lightly toss or roll the yarn to another student. The student who receives the yarn ball says a word that begins with Y before tossing or rolling it to another student. Repeat until each student has had a chance to participate. Cut out several Y‘s from cardboard, and have students practice wrapping the Y in yarn. Create a sensory bin full of yellow items (yellow pom-poms, feathers, yarn pieces, and so on). Give students cups and spoons and let them explore.
As an extension to the lesson, read Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett, Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka, Yes Day! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and Yak and Gnu by Juliette Maclver.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Our preschool lessons include additional resources that you can use throughout the lesson. They are provided to give you as much content as possible to complete the lesson without having to find sources on their own. For instance, if the lesson requires you to show students pictures, you can use the ones in the additional resources.
Preschool Philosophy
Our preschool curriculum is thoughtfully designed by professional teachers to nurture curiosity, build foundational skills, and prepare young learners for kindergarten and beyond. Each preschool lesson plan offers age-appropriate activities to promote early literacy, math readiness, creativity, and social-emotional growth.
At the preschool level, children are developing rapidly—socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. The goal of our lesson plans for preschool is to provide structured yet engaging learning experiences that spark imagination, encourage problem-solving, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
