What our Alphabet: Letter X lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter X teaches young learners about the twenty-fourth letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter X and name at least two words that have an X in them. This lesson is for students in preschool.

X MARKS THE SPOT ACTIVITY

For the activity, you will need to do some preparation. Print out as many large X outlines (on sturdy white paper) as you have students. Draw little Xs with a white crayon within the outline, as many as you want. Pass the pages out to students when you’re ready for the activity. Students will paint with watercolors on their paper, revealing the white Xs as they go!

Options and Extensions

There are several additional options you could add to the lesson. Have an “X marks the spot” theme day. Students can dress as pirates, read pirate stories, like How to Be a Pirate by Sue Fliess, and eat pirate’s booty as a snack. Put sand in a sensory bin with some pretend gems or treasures. Let students bury the gems in the sand and mark the spot by drawing an X with their finger. Students can exclaim, “X marks the spot!” Make an X building station. Set out pipe cleaners, craft sticks, straws, construction paper cut into large strips, Q-tips, and any other craft materials on hand. Have students build the letter X with various materials.
