Description

What our Alphabet: Letter W lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter W teaches young learners about the twenty-third letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter W and name at least two words that begin with W. This lesson is for students in preschool.

WORM PAINTING ACTIVITY

For the activity, provide students with the large W outline from Additional Resources. Pass out the yarn string cut to the size of a worm. Demonstrate how to hold the yarn by one end and dip the other end in the paint, getting at least half of the yarn string covered in paint. Demonstrate how to wiggle the worm (yarn) back and forth on the W paper to get worm tracks. Pass out paint. Help students create their own wiggly worm painting. Let dry and display.

Options and Extensions

There are lots of additional options you could add to the lesson. Create a water table, fill it with sponges, funnels, and cups. Put plastic whales or other animals, and let students wash the animals. Give students Wikki Stix to create a letter W. Bring in gummy worms, watermelon, or waffles for a W-themed snack. Create a sensory table by filling a large bin or tub with sand. Cut straws in half and cover with sand. Let students dig for worms.

As an extension to the lesson, read The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli and Mrs. Wishy-Washy by Joy Cowley.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Our preschool lessons include additional resources that you can use throughout the lesson. They are provided to give you as much content as possible to complete the lesson without having to find sources on their own. For instance, if the lesson requires you to show students pictures, you can use the ones in the additional resources.
