What our Alphabet: Letter S lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter S teaches young learners about the nineteenth letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter S and name at least two words that begin with S. This lesson is for students in preschool.

STONE SOUP ACTIVITY

For the activity, students will “make” their own stone soup. Provide students with the large outline of the cooking pot. Tell them they get to make their own “stone soup” and can add whatever S ingredient to their soup they would like. Students can cut out the ingredients from additional resources and glue them in the pot or draw their own S ingredients. Once completed, ask them to share what ingredients they used to make their stone soup. Ask with whom they would share their soup!

Options and Extensions

There are several additional options you could add to the lesson. Add sand, shaving cream, sprinkles, or salt to a sensory box for some S-themed fun. Cut several letter S‘s out of sandpaper and/or make some using salt to create a sensory S. Create a soup kitchen dramatic play area. Add play food, a big cooking pot, a stirring spoon, and plastic bowls. Provide books about soup, such as Every Color Soup by Jorey Hurley, Soup Day by Melissa Iwai, or Duck Soup by Jackie Urbanovic. Dance to the song “Shake My Sillies Out.” Bring in soup for the students to try, or use a crockpot to make a soup together.

As an extension to the lesson, read Stone Soup by Marcia Brown*, Sheep Go to Sleep by Nancy Shaw, and The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss.

*NOTE: This book is a little long for preschoolers; it might be best to show the pictures and summarize the story instead.
