What our Alphabet: Letter O lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter O teaches young learners about the fifteenth letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter O and name at least two words that begin with O. This lesson is for students in preschool.

OCTOPUS O ACTIVITY

For the activity, students will create an octopus using outlined O and tentacles. Demonstrate how to dip your finger into the paint and gently stamp it on one of the tentacles to create the suckers. Do a few to show the pattern. Pass out paper, glue, paint, paintbrushes, and a set of eight tentacles to each student. Help students as they paint the suckers onto the tentacles. Once the paint has dried, help students arrange the tentacles around the O to create octopuses. Students can also add a face on their octopus if they desire. Let dry and display.

Options and Extensions

There are lots of additional options you could add to the lesson. Put Orbeez in a sensory bin and add scoops, funnels, and plastic octopuses if available. Lay a hula hoop on the ground. Put pictures of O words inside the circle and let students gently toss a bean bag onto the pictures. Bring in any O-shaped cereal for an O-themed snack or have students string them on a pipe cleaner for fine motor skills practice.
