Description
What our Alphabet: Letter K lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter K teaches young learners about the eleventh letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter K and name at least two words that begin with K. This lesson is for students in preschool.
DESIGN A KITE ACTIVITY
For the activity, students will design their own kites. Pass out the kite templates with the K in the middle from Additional Resources. If you want, have students cut out the kites for cutting practice. Otherwise, cut them out beforehand. Have students trace the letter K with their fingers and also with a marker, crayon, or paint stick if desired. Students will draw a picture of a word that starts with K. Use the pictures from the lesson to help students brainstorm ideas. Students can then decorate their kites however they wish. When finished, hang the kites up from the ceiling for a fun display. At the end, sing the following song to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”:
Fly, fly, fly your kite
Up into the sky.
If the wind is blowing strongly,
Watch it zoom up high!
Options and Extensions
There are several additional options you could add to the lesson. Sing, or listen to, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins. Fill a large bin or tub with kinetic sand to create a K sensory bin. Fill the container with small toys or objects that begin with the letter K, such as keys and kittens. Let students dig, scoop, and explore while naming items that start with K.
As an extension to the lesson, read Kite Day by Will Hillenbrand, Stuck by Oliver Jeffers, and Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Our preschool lessons include additional resources that you can use throughout the lesson. They are provided to give you as much content as possible to complete the lesson without having to find sources on their own. For instance, if the lesson requires you to show students pictures, you can use the ones in the additional resources.
Preschool Philosophy
Our preschool curriculum is thoughtfully designed by professional teachers to nurture curiosity, build foundational skills, and prepare young learners for kindergarten and beyond. Each preschool lesson plan offers age-appropriate activities to promote early literacy, math readiness, creativity, and social-emotional growth.
At the preschool level, children are developing rapidly—socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. The goal of our lesson plans for preschool is to provide structured yet engaging learning experiences that spark imagination, encourage problem-solving, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
