What our Alphabet: Letter E lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter E teaches young learners about the fifth letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter E and name at least two words that begin with E. This lesson is for students in preschool.

ELMER THE ELEPHANT ACTIVITY

For this activity, students will first read or listen to the book Elmer by David McKee. Then, using the materials you provide, they will create patterned E’s that look like Elmer from the book.

Options and Extensions

There are a couple of options you could do to add to the lesson. One is to make egg shakers. Fill a plastic egg partway with uncooked rice and tape shut. Decorate with E stickers or markers. Play “Baby Elephant Walk” by Henry Mancini and have students march around the room like an elephant, shaking their homemade egg shaker to the beat. Another idea is to fill a sensory bin with shredded plastic or paper grass and plastic eggs. Provide tongs, baskets, spoons, and clean egg cartons, and let students explore collecting and sorting the eggs.

As an extension to the lesson, read Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss, Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert, and Edward the Emu by Sheena Knowles.
