Sentence-Level Context Clues

$1.95

With our Sentence-Level Context Clues lesson plan, students learn how to use the context clues in a sentence to determine the meaning of a word.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to give each student a word to look up in a dictionary and create a sentence with it using context clues; they will then have another student read their sentence and try to determine the meaning of the word using the clues.

Description

What our Sentence-Level Context Clues lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Sentence-Level Context Clues teaches students about sentence-level context and how to use it to determine the meaning of a word. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the green box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are dictionaries, containers, and the handouts. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can pair students for the activity and copy the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have students find new words with context clues in their current reading material or other content. You can also give each student a word to look up in a dictionary and create a sentence with it using context clues; they will then have another student read their sentence and try to determine the meaning of the word using the clues.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

SENTENCE-LEVEL CONTEXT CLUES LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Clues for New Words

The Sentence-Level Context Clues lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson begins by explaining that clues can help you solve a mystery. If your sandwich goes missing, but your dog is licking its lips, you can determine that your dog ate your sandwich.

We can use clues to help solve problems. When you’re reading, you might have a problem with a new word or phrase. If you haven’t seen the word or phrase before, you might not know what it means. You can use clues to help you figure out the meaning. We can often find these clues in the same paragraph or passage as the unknown word or phrase.

The lesson includes an example passage, where students need to figure out the meaning of the word value. In this passage, someone is getting a raise because the boss says he values the work the employee is doing. Getting a raise is a good thing, so the meaning of the word value must be positive. The clues that help you figure out the meaning are underlined in the example paragraph. By reading and thinking about these clues, you can figure out that the word value means to have a high opinion of or be important.

We call the clues used to determine the meaning of an unknown word context clues. You can use these clues like a detective to learn new words. The lesson closes with another example passage and unfamiliar word.

SENTENCE-LEVEL CONTEXT CLUES LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Sentence-Level Context Clues lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

CHOOSING WORDS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will work with a partner to complete the activity worksheet. Each pair will cut out the words on the worksheet, place them into a container, and then take turns choosing words from the container. For each word chosen, they will look it up in the dictionary and then use it in a sentence, including context clues so that their partner can determine the meaning of the word using their sentence.

Students may work alone or in groups if you’d prefer.

MATCHING PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will first match words in the provided sentences to their definitions based on context clues. Next, they will write four sentences using specific words from the previous exercise.

SENTENCE-LEVEL CONTEXT CLUES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to read the provided sentences and use context clues to determine the meaning of the underlined word in each. They will also circle the context clues that helped them find the meaning. Finally, they will use the underlined word correctly in a new sentence.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
