Description
What our Operations with Multi-Digit Decimals lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Operations with Multi-Digit Decimals lesson plan teaches students how to solve multi-digit decimal problems with operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals using the standard algorithms. This lesson is for students in 6th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. If you have more advanced students, you can add in more place values for the decimals. An optional addition to this lesson is to have your students write their own decimal cards to use in class or to practice at home. You can also have your students demonstrate how to solve a problem for the class giving step by step instructions. Another option is to have your students write problems on white boards or with chalk outside. Finally, you could provide your students with a certain amount of time to complete as many problems as possible.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
OPERATIONS WITH MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
The Operations with Multi-Digit Decimals lesson plan includes three content pages. It walks students through the steps for solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems with multi-digit decimals. The lesson includes example problems for each operation.
Addition
Solve addition problems with multi-digit decimals using the following steps. First, place one number on top of the other. Second, line up the decimal points. Third, add extra zeros so that each number is the same length. Fourth, add the numbers and carry if necessary.
Subtraction
Solve subtraction problems with multi-digit decimals using the following steps. First, place the larger number on top of the smaller number. Second, line up the decimal points. Third, add extra zeros so that each number is the same length. Fourth, subtract the numbers and borrow if necessary.
Multiplication
Solve multiplication problems with multi-digit decimals using the following steps. You multiply decimals as if the decimals don’t exist! First, line up numbers to the furthest right. Second, multiply each digit in the top number which each digit in the bottom number. Third, add the products. Fourth, place the decimal back into the answer the same number of spaces equal to the sum of the decimal places in both factors.
Division
Solve division problems with multi-digit decimals using the following steps. If the divisor is a whole number, first place the decimal point directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Second, divide using the standard process.
If the divisor is not a whole number, first move the decimal of the divisor to the right in order to make it a whole number. Second, move the decimal in the dividend the same number of spaces the decimal in the divisor was moved. Third, place the decimal point directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Fourth, divide using the standard process.
OPERATIONS WITH MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Operations with Multi-Digit Decimals lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
CARDS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to draw two decimal card and one operations card and then solve. They will do this nine times.
SOLVING PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will solve three addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems with multi-digit decimals.
OPERATIONS WITH MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Like the practice worksheet, for the homework assignment, students will solve three addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems with multi-digit decimals.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
