What our Read and Write Decimals to Thousandths lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Read and Write Decimals to Thousandths teaches students about decimals, including how to read numbers that contain them and what they represent. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to read and write decimals to the thousandths place. This lesson is for students in 5th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional adjustment to the lesson activity is to have your students search for decimal use on food packages or other product labels. For an additional activity, you could have your students estimate the sizes of small objects and write a decimal for each. Finally, to add to the lesson, you could discuss the use of decimals in various careers.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

READ AND WRITE DECIMALS TO THOUSANDTHS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Decimal Places

The Read and Write Decimals to Thousandths lesson plan includes two content pages. Students have likely already learned about whole number place values (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on). They might also already know the decimal place values, such as tenths and hundredths. The lesson includes some helpful diagrams that show decimal place values and how to read them. For example, 0.9 is nine tenths and 0.18 is eighteen hundredths. Written as fractions, 0.9 is 9/10 and 0.18 is 18/100.

Whole number place value extends to larger values such as thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, and so on for infinity. Decimal place values can also become smaller and extend to the thousandths, ten-thousandths, and so on for infinity!

Thousandths

To read and write decimals as small as thousandths, simply add one more place value to the right of a decimal beyond the tenths and hundredths places. The thousandths place is the third digit to the right of the decimal point.

Let’s take a look at a few examples. First, let’s look at the decimal 0.583. In words, this number is five hundred eighty three thousandths. Written as a fraction, it’s 583/1000. Second, the decimal 0.007 is read as seven thousandths and the fraction is 7/1000.

Sometimes, you might find decimals written with additional zeros in the hundredths or thousandths places. You can ignore them! For example, 0.10 = 0.1 and 0.540 = 0.54. The fractions for each of the decimals are also equal: 10/100 = 1/10 and 540/1000 = 54/100. Finally, when you have a whole number with a decimal such as 2.567, you read it as two and five-hundred sixty-seven thousandths. The word “and” replaces the decimal point.

READ AND WRITE DECIMALS TO THOUSANDTHS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Read and Write Decimals to Thousandths lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

REAL-WORLD DECIMALS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will use the Internet or other available resources to find real-world decimals used as measurements. They will then complete the chart on the worksheet for each of the place values, following the example.

WORDS AND DECIMALS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to write each listed decimal number in words. They will then write each listed number in words in its correct decimal form.

READ AND WRITE DECIMALS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will match the written form of each number with its decimal form. They will then write each number in its decimal form and as a fraction.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
