What our Divisibility Rules lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Divisibility Rules lists the rules to determine if a number is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to apply divisibility rules to solve problems. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson include scissors, bright paper, and markers.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students create numbers and check for divisibility rules as a class using the study tool they create during the lesson activity. You could also have your students play a game where each team must come up with the divisibility of a large number and whichever team completes it correctly first wins a point.

Divisibility Rules
The Divisibility Rules lesson plan includes one content page. It’s important to understand the rules for division. These rules tell you when a number is divisible by another number. The lesson tells you some of these rules!
A number is divisible by 2 is if the ones digit is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8); a number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3; a number is divisible by 4 if the number formed by the last two digits is divisible by 4; a number is divisible by 5 if the ones digit is a 5 or 0; a number is divisible by 6 if the number is divisible by both 2 and 3; a number is divisible by 9 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9; and finally, a number is divisible by 10 if the ones digit is 0.
Now that we know the rules, we need to be able to use them to determine whether different numbers are divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, or 10. The number 90, for example! 90 is divisible by 2 because it’s even; is divisible by 3 because 9 + 0 = 9 and 9 is divisible by 3; is divisible by 5 because the ones digit is 0; is divisible by 6 because it’s divisible by both 2 and 3; is divisible by 9 because 9+ 0 = 9 and 9 is divisible by 9; and is divisible by 10 because the ones digit is 0. It is not divisible by 4.
Let’s look at another number, 378! 378 is divisible by 2 because it’s even; is divisible by 3 because 3 + 7 + 8 = 18 and 18 is divisible by 3; is divisible by 6 because it’s divisible by both 2 and 3; and is divisible by 9 because 3 + 7 + 8 = 18 and 18 is divisible by 9. It is not divisible by 4, 5, or 10.
With a little practice, you can easily figure out which numbers are divisible by which!
DIVISIBILITY RULES LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Divisibility Rules lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
STUDY TOOL ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to create a study tool for the divisibility rules using brightly colored paper. Each student will fold their paper in half long ways, cut the top half into 7 strips, and label each strip with a number (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10). Next, they will write the corresponding rule on the inside of each cut strip. Finally, they will write an example for each rule!
CHECK MARK PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will place a check mark in the boxes on the worksheet if the number shown is divisible by each factor. They will then choose a few of their own numbers and check those for divisibility.
DIVISIBILITY RULES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to first determine whether each number shown is divisible by the second number shown. Then, they will determine whether each number listed is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, or 10.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will answer three questions about how to know if numbers are divisible by other numbers.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
