Description
Our Reconstruction lesson plan introduces students to the time period following the Civil War known as the Reconstruction Era. It was a contentious period which often mirrors moments in society and politics today. The students are given a summary of the causes of the Civil War, and then the healing of a nation, plus the rebuilding of the Southern states, both literally and ideologically. During this lesson, students are asked to work with a partner to create a Reconstruction Era timeline, identifying important events in each of a given set of years; once complete, they will share their timeline with the class, sharpening their presentation and public speaking skills. Students are also asked to match terms with their definitions, demonstrating their understanding of the lesson vocabulary.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to define and explain Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The students will also be able to list and identify important events during the era.
