Description
Our Word Problems, Multi-Step lesson plan focuses on organizing word problems into their various parts and determining the operations needed to solve each part so students are not overwhelmed by the complexity of the problems. Several examples are provided for the teacher to do along with the students, including problems with real-world applications like figuring out how to split up a bill at the end of a dinner out. Students are asked to use their creativity and collaboration skills in order to first brainstorm the places they use math every day and then create a short play in which a character has to solve multistep word problems to resolve a conflict; their presentation skills are put to use when they present it to the class. Students are also asked to individually complete practice problems in order to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to solve word problems with multiple steps utilizing the four basic operations.
