Description

What our Colors: The Rainbow lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Colors: The Rainbow teaches young learners about the rainbow colors. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the colors in the rainbow. This lesson is for students in preschool.

RAINBOW LIGHT CATCHER ACTIVITY

For the activity, Review the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Pass out coffee filter and markers. Have students create a colorful rainbow design on the coffee filter. (Teacher Tip: Markers can bleed through the coffee filters easily. It is best to have another piece of paper or a paper towel underneath.) Once complete, allow students to use the spray bottle to spray a few drops of water on the coffee filter. Watch the colors spread. Glue some cotton balls on each side of the filter for clouds. Once dry, hang it up in the window so the colors show.

Options and Extensions

There are a number of options to include in this lesson if you want to. Have students wear things with rainbows or bring rainbow items to school. Fill a sensory bin with pom poms in rainbow colors and add matching cupcake liners, and have students sort each color. Give students a black or white pipe cleaner and rainbow cereal or pony beads. Let students make a rainbow bracelet. Bring in food to try. Create a rainbow fruit dish, rainbow popsicles, rainbow fruit snack, and/or rainbow fish crackers. Play the song “The Rainbow Colors Song” and let the kids sing along.

As an extension to the lesson, read the following books:

–A Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman
–How to Catch a Rainbow by Naomi Jones and Ana Gomez
–Raindrops to Rainbow John Mickols Jr and Charlene Chua
–How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow by Monica Sweeny
–Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert
–Read One Rainy Day by Tammi Salzano
