Description

What our Alphabet: Letter U lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabet: Letter U teaches young learners about the twenty-first letter of the alphabet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter U and name at least two words that begin with U. This lesson is for students in preschool.

UMBRELLA U’s ACTIVITY

For the activity, students create colorful umbrellas using cupcake liners. Demonstrate how to glue half of a cupcake liner on the paper and add a little handle. Pass out paper, glue, and cupcake liners. Let students create as many umbrellas as they wish. When students’ papers are nearly complete, say, “Our umbrellas aren’t complete without the letter U. Remember how it rained letters U‘s on us? Let’s make it rain letter U‘s on these umbrellas, too.” Pass out the raindrop U‘s. Let students trace them with their fingers and with a marker or crayon if desired. They can glue as many letters U raindrops on their picture as desired as well. (Teacher Tip: To add a little pizzazz, have students use glue and glitter to trace the letter U‘s on the raindrop before gluing them to their paper.) Once dry, display in the classroom.

Options and Extensions

There are additional options you could add to the lesson. Look at the pictures in the wordless book The Umbrella by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert. If unifix cubes are available, have students use them to create a letter U. Give students a stuffed animal and let them practice all the U directions: up, under, and upside down.

As an extension to the lesson, read Umbrella by Beth Ferry and Tom Lichtenheld, The Big Umbrella by Amy June Bates, A Great Day for Up by Dr. Seuss, and Aliens Love Underpants or Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedman.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Our preschool lessons include additional resources that you can use throughout the lesson. They are provided to give you as much content as possible to complete the lesson without having to find sources on their own. For instance, if the lesson requires you to show students pictures, you can use the ones in the additional resources.
