Lesson Objectives and Overview: Sports: Professional Wrestling is a high-interest reading comprehension lesson plan. As such, students will practice various close reading and comprehension skills. In addition, they will learn about the entertaining sport of WWWF-style wrestling. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. For this lesson, you’ll need craft masks, elastic cords (usually come with the masks), and colorful markers or paint.

Did you know that WWWF-style wrestling has a really cool history? It all began many years ago when wrestling matches turned into exciting shows with lots of action and drama. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wrestling was much different and was more serious than wrestling today. As time passed, it transformed into a form of entertainment. Wrestlers started incorporating theatrics, creating colorful personas, and engaging in rivalries to entertain audiences. This style became what we know as professional wrestling.
One of the key figures in professional wrestling was Frank Gotch. He was one of the most famous wrestlers of his time in the early 1900s. Gotch’s matches were not only displays of athleticism but also theatrical performances that drew large crowds. Over time, regional wrestling promotions began to emerge across the United States, each with its own set of talented wrestlers and unique storytelling. These promotions laid the foundation for what would eventually become the World Wide Wrestling Federation. The WWWF was founded in 1952 by Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt. It would later evolve into what is now known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world.

In Japan, wrestling takes on its own unique style, puroresu. Puroresu is characterized by hard-hitting action and technical prowess. And in Mexico, lucha libre is a popular form of wrestling known for its high-flying maneuvers and colorful masks.
TV shows for professional wrestling have reached many viewers and made the sport very popular. Wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson became household names, attracting audiences with their larger-than-life personas and thrilling matches. Big events like WrestleMania bring in huge crowds and money, making headlines worldwide.
Did you know that wrestlers like Hulk Hogan and The Rock became famous outside of the ring, too? Hulk Hogan appeared in movies and TV shows and even had his own animated series called “Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling” in the 1980s. The Rock is very well known has been in many movies and appeared in television shows as well.

To become a professional wrestler, you need more than just muscles. You must also have a cool persona with a distinctive look and personality. From flashy costumes to catchy phrases, wrestlers know how to put on a show! Many wrestlers adopt impressive personas. For instance, The Undertaker is known for his spooky, supernatural character, and “Macho Man” Randy Savage was famous for his flamboyant attire and over-the-top personality.
In addition to developing their characters, wrestlers also spend hours training in the gym and practicing their moves in the ring. Wrestling is a physically demanding sport that requires strength, agility, and endurance. Wrestlers often travel worldwide to compete in different promotions and hone their skills against various opponents.
Professional Wrestling 101
Let’s talk about how professional wrestling works. Matches happen in a ring, where wrestlers use different moves to try to win. A ring measures around 20 feet by 20 feet. The ring is typically elevated above the ground and surrounded by ropes that serve as boundaries for the wrestlers. These ropes are usually made of steel cable covered with soft padding and are strung around the perimeter of the ring. The goal is to pin the opponent’s shoulders to the mat for a count of three or to make them give up.
Wrestlers use special moves, like suplexes, body slams, and submission holds. Each wrestler has a unique style and signature moves, which adds to the excitement of the match. Some wrestlers are known for their strength and power, while others are known for their agility and speed.
What makes professional wrestling so awesome? It’s a mix of sport and entertainment, with lots of action and drama. Wrestling matches shake the entire stadium with applause and excitement. Each one will help students solidify their grasp of the material they learned throughout the lesson. You can refer to the classroom procedure guidelines to know when to hand out each worksheet.
LUCHA LIBRE MASK ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
Students will create their own lucha libre masks. They will sketch a design in the box at the bottom of the page. Then they will use construction paper or other material to create the mask. Display their finished masks in the classroom for everyone to see!
SPORTS: PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet lists 10 questions based on the content. These questions all relate to the content pages, so students will need to refer to them often for the answers. In addition, each question provides which reading tool the question corresponds to, such as text feature, vocabulary, or comprehension.
Worksheet Answer Keys
At the end of the lesson plan document is an answer key for the practice worksheet. The correct answers are all in red to make it easier for you to compare them with students’ responses. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
