What our Comparing Literature lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Comparing Literature teaches students to develop and strengthen their analytical and critical thinking skills by analyzing two texts to compare and contrast them using Venn Diagrams. They will also learn to orally present information related to comparing literature. This lesson is for students in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the orange box that you might find useful. COMPARING LITERATURE LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Comparing Literature lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
COMPARING LITERATURE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to read and compare two pieces of text. They will compare the texts by answering five questions about them. These questions ask if the pieces have similar themes, what else they have in common, what their key differences are, and more.
READ AND COMPARE PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will read and compare two pieces of literature: “The Hitchhiker” by Roald Dahl and “The Brahmin and the Three Crooks” from the ancient Indian text The Panchatantra. Students will read, analyze, and compare the texts. They will then answer six specific questions about the two pieces. The questions ask about similar ideas and themes, key differences, and more.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to compare and contrast two texts of their choice using a three dimensional Venn Diagram. They will include visual representations of the elements they include. They will present their Venn Diagram to the class, explaining the similarities and differences between the texts they chose. The worksheet includes some ideas for ways to build their three dimensional Venn Diagram, along with space to plan what they will include.
QUIZ
This lesson includes a quiz, which you can use to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, they will first answer a few general questions about comparing and contrasting literature. Next, they will read two pieces of text and will answer questions about them to compare and contrast.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. However, all of the answer keys note that students’ answers for each worksheet will vary. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
