Lesson Objectives and Overview: Properties of Operations Addition and Subtraction teaches students various properties or addition and subtraction and how to use them to solve equations. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. This lesson is for students in 1st grade.
Classroom Procedure

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. Some suggestions for how to extend the lesson and add group work to the lesson include using songs to teach the properties from videos, making up stories about commuting, creating large posters to be displayed in the classroom about each property, and posting problems around the room on colored paper for students to solve. You can also have your students invent and draw superheroes or cartoon strips using the properties.

Commutative Property
The Properties of Operations: Addition and Subtraction lesson plan includes two content pages. “Commute” means to travel back and forth. People commute to work when they go from their home to their workplace and back. Students commute to school. The commutative property of addition says that when the addends (the numbers you add) change, the sum does not. For example, 7 + 2 = 9 and 2 + 7 = 9. Seven and two are the addends and nine is the sum. You can switch the order of the addends without the sum changing. The lesson includes another example: 4 + 6 = 10 and 6 + 4 = 10. The addends change order but the sum stays the same.
Property of Addition
When you group things together, you’re associating them. In a group game at recess, you associate with the other students who want to play the game.
Associative Property of Addition
If you have more than two addends, you can add them using the associative property. You group them to add them together. The associative property often uses parenthesis to group numbers together. The lesson includes a few examples. In the first example, you’re adding 1, 3, and 5. You can use the associative property to group this problem in three different ways. The lesson shows you two of these ways: (1 + 3) + 5 (grouping the 1 and 3), 1 + (3 + 5) (grouping the 3 and 5) and asks the students to write in the third way to group the numbers. How you group the numbers doesn’t matter—the sum will always be the same. The lesson includes another example using the number 2, 8, and 4. Like with the first example, it shows two ways to group the numbers and asks students to write in the third. Students will also draw a picture illustrating 2 + 8 + 4, draw a circle around two of numbers, and find the sum.

DOMINO ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to choose a domino, draw it, and write an addition equation to match. They will also turn the domino and change the addends, writing the new addition equation. This helps illustrate that the order of the addends does not change the sum.
NUMBER CUBES PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will roll number cubes. They’ll use the numbers on the cubes to fill in the three squares on the worksheet to create an addition problem. They will then use the associative property to solve the problem.
PROPERTIES OF OPERATIONS: ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to complete a few short exercises. First, they will write in the number missing from an equation to make the equation true. They will then draw a picture to support their answer. Next, they will draw dots on dominoes to show the commutative property for two different addition problems. Finally, they will answer a word problem about the commutative property.
