Description
Our Evidence and Reasoning lesson plan introduces students to the steps and strategies to use evidence and reasoning to support a claim, often called “Claim, Evidence, Reasoning” (CER). The strategies may be used in science, social studies, language arts, and all subject areas where students must support a claim. The information is also helpful for students to distinguish support-based claims from false claims made in news articles, opinion pieces, or in other writing sources. During this lesson, students are asked to work with a partner to write 3 claims, including the evidence, which they can find online, and the reasoning for each; these claims will then be exchanged for another group’s, which the students will then evaluate for truth. Students are also asked to label the steps for supporting a claim in their correct order in order to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use evidence and reasoning to support a claim.
