What our lesson guides include
Overview: The Life Sciences Learning Roadmap Gr5-6 lesson guide introduces students to concepts and material that explore these unique fields of science. Students will study a number of varying subjects that align with NGSS standards. In total, the Life Sciences guide includes 54 lessons.
Learn Bright learning roadmaps are useful tools for organizing your teaching agenda, whether in the classroom or at home. The science roadmaps are divided into general subject areas: earth and space, engineering and technology, life sciences, and physical science. This roadmap includes the lessons for the 5-6 grade band in life sciences. It lists the lessons in alphabetical order, and you will find the grade band associated with the lesson below the lesson title. Note that some lessons fall into more than one subject area or grade band.
Because there is no national standard for teaching science-related topics, you can choose any number of these lessons to teach your students throughout the years. Many lessons relate well to each other, and you may benefit from teaching multiple lessons at the same time. For instance, the Life Sciences Learning Roadmap Gr5-6 lesson guide includes separate lessons for different parts of the human body. You could teach them all in conjunction with each other. The same is true for topics related to germs, body systems, and more. Feel free to be flexible and adjust when necessary to fit your unique needs!
Life Sciences Learning Roadmap Gr5-6 lesson guide
The learning roadmap for the life sciences subjects includes 54 lesson plans for students in 5th grade and 6th grade. The topics vary from the energy pyramid to the immune system to the concept of heredity. The state educational standards for every lesson, which align with NGSS standards, are on the individual lesson product pages. Below is a short list of lessons from this roadmap. Each lesson contains a brief description that explains what students will learn.
Life Sciences Lessons
- Chemistry of the Body—For this lesson, students will learn about the various chemicals that make up the human body. They will discover why each chemical within them is necessary for them to survive. In addition, they will learn the general percentages of each chemical. This lesson is for students in 5th grade and 6th grade.
- Fields of Science—This lesson explores the three main branches of science that all fields fall into. Students will learn about a few specific areas of study within each branch. They will also learn how to use Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes to determine what a particular field relates to. This lesson is for students in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.
- Mitosis and Meiosis—In this lesson, students learn about these two processes by which cells reproduce. Students will discover facts about each of these methods of cell division and describe their similarities and differences. They will also learn which organisms undergo each process. This lesson is for students in 5th grade and 6th grade.
- Vitamins and Minerals—Our Vitamins and Minerals lesson plan teaches students about the importance of these nutrients for the body. They will learn to identify a variety of nutrients and describe how they help the body function. They will also learn what makes a vitamin and a mineral different from each other. This lesson is for students in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.
