DINOS A TO Z: TYRANNOSAURUS REX LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Tyrannosaurus Rex

The Dinos A to Z: Tyrannosaurus Rex lesson plan contains one content page. If you were asked to name one dinosaur, the first one to pop into your mind is probably the Tyrannosaurus Rex (tie·RAN·uh·SOAR·russ REX) or T-Rex for short! Known worldwide, the T-Rex is the world’s most famous dinosaur. Its name means “tyrant lizard king,” which is fitting for this aggressive predator. The Tyrannosaurus Rex was an apex predator, meaning it was at the top of the food chain. Rex is one of three species of Tyrannosaurs.

T-Rexes roamed North America about 66 million years ago. They were approximately 12 meters (40 feet) long, weighed 7,000 kilograms (more than 15,000 pounds), and could grow to a height of up to 6 meters (20 feet). This dino walked upright and was surprisingly fast. But by comparison to other dinosaurs, it was not large. However, what it lacked in size it made up for in hunting skills. T-Rexes had a row of sixty razor-sharp teeth about 20 centimeters (8 inches) long that tore into its prey, ripping off a hundred pounds of flesh with a single bite. It could easily crunch the bones of its prey!

Interesting Facts

Encased in its massive skull, the T-Rex had a much larger brain (twice as large) than that of other dinosaurs. Scientists believe the larger brain may have meant the dinosaur was more intelligent than other dinos. This may explain its remarkable ability to hunt. T-Rexes had a keen sense of smell and could detect prey from long distances. They mostly hunted for food, but they probably scavenged the bodies of dead dinosaurs as well.

Teeth marks discovered on some T-Rex fossils indicate they probably fought with each other. Some scientists believe that groups of T-Rexes lived and hunted together in packs. That is much like our modern wolf packs do today! However, scientists don’t have enough evidence to confirm that as a fact and are still investigating.

If you were a dinosaur living in the same neighborhood as a Tyrannosaurus Rex, you would be constantly living in fear. These dinosaurs were aggressive and cunning, and they were the ultimate predators. Truly, they were the kings of the dinosaur age they lived in!
