DINOS A TO Z: FUKUISAURUS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Fukuisaurus

The Dinos A to Z: Fukuisaurus lesson plan contains one content page. One of the more interesting dinosaurs you may not have ever heard of is the Fukuisaurus (FOO·KOO·ee·SOAR·russ). The dinosaur got its name from where it was discovered, Fukui, Japan. It is unique because of its bird-like posture. Scientists believe the Fukuisaurus may be one of the earliest relatives of our modern birds.

A Fukuisaurus stood about five feet tall. It weighed around 400 pounds. This dinosaur is thought to be an herbivore. Fukuisauruses were nearly 14 feet in length. Something unusual about this dinosaur is that scientists are unsure if it walked on two legs, four legs, or alternated between them. Most believe it mainly walked on two legs and would run on four legs when escaping predators.

Fun Facts

Another distinctive feature of the Fukuisaurus was discovered by examining the fossil remains of its jaw. This dino was unique because its jaw was designed so it couldn’t chew food using a sideways motion. Since it was an herbivore chewing tough grass, leaves, and other stemmy material, chewing might be difficult with its rigid jaw. For most animals that thrive on plants, the side-to-side sliding or grinding breaks down fibrous food. This makes it easier for them to digest it.

Fukuisauruses probably lived in herds. Scientists believe they were social animal. Living in herds helped protect them from predators. The herds wandered the plains and forests of the early Cretaceous Period, nearly 120 million years ago. During this time, the earth was humid and filled with a lush landscape of plants and ferns. It would have been a perfect environment for this dinosaur to live in!

Dinosaur fossils offer many clues to what life was like when dinosaurs roamed Earth. But even with the clues from fossils, paleontologists who study fossils still have to infer what a dinosaur looked like or what it ate. The Fukuisaurus was one of the earliest dinosaurs. Scientists are still learning about it when new fossils are discovered!
