DINOS A TO Z: BRACHIOSAURUS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Brachiosaurus

The Dinos A to Z: Kentrosaurus lesson plan contains one content page. Imagine an animal as tall as a four-story building. It weighs as much as much as six elephants or 99,000 pounds! The Brachiosaurus (BRACK·key·uh·SOAR·russ) was a long-necked herbivore that munched on the upper limbs of trees that other dinos couldn’t reach. Scientists think it was one of the largest dinosaurs to walk on the earth.

Because of its size, the Brachiosaurus was not a fast runner. Predators might have thought it would make an easy snack! But its enormous size probably frightened most predators away. Initially, scientists thought this huge dino may have lived in water. It would have been easier to move about in water than on land. Later, they realized that the Brachiosaurus was one of the many enormous land dinosaurs that roamed the earth.

Interesting Facts

A Brachiosaurus’s forelegs were longer than its rear legs. That’s where it gets its name from—arm (brachio) lizard. These dinos needed super strong legs to stand and eat leaves from tall trees. The length of its forelegs helped the Brachiosaurus reach high into trees to pull down the leafy, stemmy food it needed.

A dinosaur as large as a Brachiosaurus needed to eat thousands of pounds of leaves and stems daily to survive. How do scientists know what these dinosaurs ate? They study fossilized dinosaur poop called coprolites. Ew! Scientists estimate that a single Brachiosaurus poop could weigh as much as 3,000 pounds. Ew, times 3,000!

Fossils of Brachiosauruses have been found in North America, Europe, and Africa. The dinosaur lived about 155 million years ago. One unique feature of enormous dinosaurs like these is that they had huge hearts. It is estimated that the heart of a Brachiosaurus possibly weighed 880 pounds! A large heart was necessary to pump blood to the dinosaur’s brain and its enormous body.
