Our Reading Orally lesson plan teaches students how to be more expressive while reading poetry aloud and how to examine the figurative and literal language in poetry to find deeper meaning. During this lesson, students are asked to read the poem “Smart” by Shel Silverstein and write a summary of what they think Silverstein is trying to say, developing their literary analysis skills. Students are also asked to practice reading poems aloud to a member of their family and then have that family member rate how expressive they were while reading aloud.
At the end of the lesson, students will read poetry with fluency and with expression. Students will comprehend poetry by examining the types of figurative and literal language in the poem.
