Our Meaning Through Words and Phrases lesson plan teaches students about affixes and roots and how to use them, combined with context clues, to determine the meaning of unknown words. During this lesson, students are asked to read passages and use context clues and phrases from the passage to write a definition for specific words used without looking them up in a dictionary. Students are also asked to fill blanks in passages in with words from a word bank, demonstrating that they can determine what words should be used in context.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots to determine the meaning of unknown words and will be able to recognize roots, base words, and affixes.
