Our Introduction to Poetry lesson plan teaches students how to read basic poetry and how to differentiate between poetry and prose. During this lesson, students are asked to sort phrases from poetry into the following categories: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch in order to demonstrate their understanding of the meaning of each phrase. Students are also asked to read poems and answer reading comprehension questions about them.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to read poetry of appropriate complexity for grade 1, and they will be able to identify the differences between prose and poetry.
