Our Identify Main Topics lesson plan teaches students how to recognize main topics, focus topics, and supporting details in writing. During this lesson, students are asked to organize information about farms into the main topic, focus topics, and supporting details; they then use this information to write a few paragraphs about farms, demonstrating their ability to sort through and organize information before using that information in their writing. Students are also asked to read a passage and answer reading comprehension questions about it, such as “What is the main topic of the text?” and “What are two supporting details in paragraph 3?”.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph nonfiction text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
