Description
Our Determining Theme lesson plan includes strategies to determine the theme of stories, fables, novels, and other types of text. Determining theme will allow students to bring more value to their reading choices, whether it’s a story, fable, article or another type of text. During this lesson, students are asked to cooperatively work with a partner to develop and write a short story, determining the themes of the story and having the option to present their story to the class, strengthening presentation and public speaking skills. Students are also asked to match the theme to the message in order to demonstrate their understanding.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
