Our Determining Messages in Text Details lesson plan teaches students about finding the message, moral, or lesson in a piece of writing. During this lesson, students are asked to work with a partner to take turns reading a myth, underlining important details that later may help them determine the message or lesson learned; they then answer the questions that follow to demonstrate their understanding of the message of the myth. Students are also asked to read a short story and tell how specific details in the story help reinforce or signal the message of the story.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.
