Our Compare/Contrast Stories – Same Genre lesson plan teaches students how to effectively compare and contrast two stories from the same genre. During this lesson, students are asked to read two different short stories and identify their themes; they then compare and contrast these themes. Students are also asked to look at a list of words and identify whether they are words that could signal a theme, such as “courage”, or a word that does not signal a theme, such as “playing”, demonstrating their ability to identify words in stories that could help them understand the themes in those stories.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the theme of a story, compare and contrast an author’s approach to theme and topic in stories with the same genre, and understand that stories may have the same theme or topic even though story elements differ.
