Our Compare and Contrast Characters lesson plan teaches students how to effectively compare and contrast two characters as well as how to use a Venn Diagram. During this lesson, students are asked to read an article about Benjamin Banneker and Benjamin Franklin and then compare and contrast Banneker with Franklin using a Venn Diagram. Students are also asked to compare two characters in a fictional story using a Venn Diagram and the methods for identifying information that should be compared – such as actions, words, and physical descriptions – taught during this lesson.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use an organized strategy to compare and contrast two or more characters in a story drawing on specific details in the text regarding the character’s thoughts, words, actions, decisions, physical attributes, or interactions with others.
