Our Understanding Addition/Subtraction of Fractions lesson plan teaches students about adding and subtracting fractions. During this lesson, students are asked to work collaboratively with a partner and use their creativity to create a poster that demonstrates that parts of a whole are fractions, that the parts may be added together, and that the parts may be subtracted from each other. Students are also asked to read statements about fractions and determine whether they are true or false, such as “Fractions are parts of a whole” and “Circles, rectangles, and squares cannot be separated into equal parts”.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators, including how two fractions refer to the same whole.
