What our Understand Multi-Digit Numbers lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Understand Multi-Digit Numbers introduces students to place value and how to read and write large numbers. The lesson also briefly discusses expanded form, and greater than, less than and equal to signs. A place value chart is included so students have a visual reference when writing the large numbers. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to read, write, and compare multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.
Classroom Procedure

Options for Lesson

Have students use a place value chart that has been laminated to compare numbers by writing the values in the correct spaces, have students write the largest and smallest numbers they can using a group of digits, have students write a number and compare it with their shoulder partner.

The Understand Multi-Digit Numbers lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
LARGEST NUMBER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will use the digits printed on the worksheet to create a number with the largest possible value. They will then explain their reasoning.
MATH SENTENCE PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to solve five problems about ranches with multi-digit numbers. For each, they will also write a math sentence using >, <, or = to compare the ranches.
UNDERSTAND MULTI-DIGIT NUMBERS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will first look at comparisons of numbers using > or < and determine whether each statement is true or false. They will also write the largest number possible with specific digits.
