Our Translation lesson plan teaches students to translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions. They practice translating expressions in both directions using the lesson material as a guide.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have your students translate expressions using a scavenger hunt format.

Description

What our Translation lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Translation equips students to translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions. This lesson starts by identifying the meaning of the associated vocabulary. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions. This lesson is for students in 4th grade and 5th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson is to have your students translate expressions using a scavenger hunt format. Another optional addition is to have your students complete a vocabulary sort using the chart. Finally, you could have your students make posters for the vocabulary words to hang on the classroom walls.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

TRANSLATION LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Translation

The Translation lesson plan includes one content page. Translating is when a word or text is expressed into another language. Math has two languages, verbal and algebraic. In math, you can translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions and vice versa.

The lesson includes an operations words and phrases table that lists some words and phrases that indicate that a specific operation is being used. It includes words and phrases for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can use these words and phrases to translate from a verbal expression to an algebraic expression.

The phrase “less than” tells you to switch the place of the terms in an equation. For example, you write “seven less than thirteen” algebraically as 13 – 7. Similarly, you write “eleven less than a number” algebraically as x – 11.

TRANSLATION LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Translation lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

MATCHING ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will cut out the cards on the worksheet. They will then use them to match the verbal and algebraic cards.

TRANSLATION PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to translate each verbal expression listed on the worksheet into an algebraic expression.

OPERATIONS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will read verbal expressions and write down the operation and key words for each. They will also write each verbal expression as an algebraic expression.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will first write down three words or phrases for each operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). They will also translate three algebraic expressions into verbal expressions.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
