Our Taxes lesson plan introduces students to the history of taxes, the reasons taxes are collected, and the origin of taxes. It also gives examples of how local, state, and federal taxes are used in societies, their tax responsibility, and a brief explanation of how to figure taxes on retail items. During this lesson, students are asked to review pay stubs and answer tax questions about them. Students are also asked to find the tax and total cost for a number of given items in order to reinforce the ways in which taxes affect people every day.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to define tax and explain reasons and some history of taxes.
