Solving Equations Using Order of Operations

$1.95

With our Solving Equations Using Order of Operations lesson plan, students learn how to solve equations using the order of operations. Students complete practice problems as a part of this lesson.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have your students solve a problem both using and not using the order of operations to see that the solution is often different.

Description

What our Solving Equations Using Order of Operations lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Solving Equations Using Order of Operations teaches students how to use the order of operations to solve equations. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to solve mathematical equations using the order of operations. This lesson is for students in 5th grade and 6th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. If you have more advanced students, you can begin to discuss the variable in other positions within the equation and discuss the concept of inverse operations in relation to the order of operations. You could also have your students solve a problem both using and not using the order of operations to see that the solution is often different.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

SOLVING EQUATIONS USING ORDER OF OPERATIONS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Solving Equations Using Order of Operations

The Solving Equations Using Order of Operations lesson plan includes one content page.

The order of operations is the priority by which you solve equations. The order in which the operations are completed are: 1. Grouping symbols: Parenthesis, brackets, absolute value, pinched parenthesis. 2. Exponents: The power of a number 3. Multiplication and Division: Go from left to right. 4. Subtraction and Addition: Go from left to right. By using the order of operations, everyone who solves the problem gets the same answer.

Let’s solve some equations using the order of operations. Let’s take a look at our first example: 4(3 + 2) = x. Using the order of operations, you deal with the grouping symbols first: 4(5) = x. Next, use multiplication to find your final answer: 20 = x.

Let’s take a look at another example: 7(3 – 1) = y. In this example, the order of operations tells you to deal with grouping symbols first: 7(2) = y. Next, use multiplication to find your final answer: 14 = y.

For the problem 10 + 3(3) = a, your first operation is multiplication: 10 + 9 = a. Next, use addition to get your final answer: 19 = a.

For the problem 5² – (6 + 4) = r, your first operation is grouping symbols: 5² – (10) = r. Your second is exponents: 25 – 10 = r. Finally, use subtraction to find your final answer: 15 = r.

Let’s look at a final example: (14 – 8) ÷ 3 = m. For this problem, your first operation is grouping symbols: (6) ÷ 3 = m. Then, use division to find your final answer: 2 = m.

Learning how to use the order of operations to solve for a variable is an important step towards solving complex equations!

SOLVING EQUATIONS USING ORDER OR OPERATIONS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Solving Equations Using Order of Operations lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

TIC TAC TOE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity, students will work with a partner to play tic tac toe. Each student will need to solve an equation correctly to place a piece on the tic tac toe board. If they are not correct, they do not get the space!

SOLVING PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to solve five problems and state the order of operations they used for each.

SOLVING EQUATIONS USING ORDER OF OPERATIONS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will first list the order of operations and explain why the order of operations is important when solving equations. Next, they will solve six practice problems.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
